Days 3 & 4: From Omaha to Rapid City and day of sight seeing

It has been an amazing last two days.  We have officially passed the 1500 miles of driving mark and we have seen a ton.

Yesterday we started our day in Council Bluffs/Omaha and walked around the visitors center and pedestrian bridge.

After the park, we jumped in the car and headed north toward Sioux City with the ultimate destination Rapid City SD.  At first when Meg suggested stopping in Sioux City I balked and said I'd just point out where I used to live, but once we got into town, I just had to take a moment to look around.  And boy, had it changed.  The two big things I noticed were that the river was VERY high and had flooded the park and riverside walkways that I had known.  The other was that there was a huge Hard Rock Casino in town.  So, of course we had to check it out.  And Megan did her first official gambling.  (Okay, penny slot, but we won!)

We needed to make time since we had 300+ miles to drive, but the call of the Corn Palace lured us to its sartorial splendor.

And once we said good by to Cornelius, we were off to Rapid City.

Dinner at the Firehouse Brewery and back to crash for a very busy day of sightseeing tomorrow/today.

Our agenda for the day was to do Badlands, Wall Drug, Crazy Horse and Mt. Rushmore.  Meg figured out a best route to see the sites and not re-drive what we'd done the day before.  So ... we started at the Badlands.

We took the scenic loop to where it intersected with highway 240 that takes you straight to Wall Drug.  As Meg described it: What Knott's Frontier Land wishes it was.  So many sites, not enough room to write.  But, a picture is worth a thousand words so ...

So, I'm about to run out of battery so I'll make this fast.  From Wall to Crazy Horse which was amazing to see how much it has grown since I was there 20-ish years ago.

Then we finished the day and evening at Mt. Rushmore where we stuck around to see them light up the faces.

Heading to Livingston, Montana tomorrow where we'll rest up and drive through Yellowstone on Friday.
